Representations of age in the media- OAP's

This is how the media represents old age pensioners, by using the stereotypical ideas we have of OAP's. Here we have put together a little montage to show some of it.

Marxist theory

Preferred reading:

Producers of a media text design it with a certain meaning in mind. They hope that audiences will decode their text in a certain way - particularly if the text is an advertisement. Preferred readings are those which tie in with hegemonic beliefs.

Oppositional reading:

Where the intended meaning of the text is totally opposed by the reader.

Negotiated reading:

A reading of a text which assumes that no absolute meaning exists and that meaning is generated and negotiated by what the reader brings to the text in terms of attitudes, values, beliefs and experience

Filming day

So we've done our filming now and I feel okay with what we have so far.
I love the movies, everything about the movies. It is very rare to find a film that you walk away from feeling inspired. Charlotte and I wanted to be excited when we were uploading our footage and we just didn't feel that way, so for the time being we are editing together what we have to see if we want to continue with this idea or if we have to come up with something else. Something that we go home and talk about.

Who is the fairest of them all? Who knows? There are 2 versions.

I'm so happy that this trailer has finally been released. Massive fan of the story and all the actors involved. I also love the fact that they've decided to make it look edgy and dark, in contrast to the other snow white film that is also coming out around the same time, who have gone with the more traditional look.

With this version, they have taken a more traditional comedic route, which although looks good, I prefer snow white and the huntsman.

Age in the media

In honour of the new american pie movie being released next year and the fact that we are focusing on Age in the media at the moment, I thought I would talk a little about the stereotypes of teenagers in movies. Albeit these days there is no such thing as teenagers in movies because they are always played by twenty-somethings.

American pie was the first of it's kind before movies like Superbad and 40 Year Old Virgin hit the screens. It sticks to the stereotypes of teenage boys where they are determined to lose their virginity before they graduate.

They also use countertypes like Michele 'The Band Geek' who openly talks about sex and is promiscuous going against the stereotypical idea that geeks are shy and quiet.

Pies will never be seen the same way again!

Main wall

I included this picture because my DVD's are the first thing you see as you enter the room, there are so many that me and Charlotte might consider taking some out.
Movie's are such a big part of my life but i don't know if our teenage killer would agree and say that this statement applies to her too. On the other hand movies could have such a big impact on youth that it in fact gives people ideas (like killing). For example the Scream movies, in Scream 2 one of the killers reveals that he is going to blame the movies, he is also a film student and in Scream 3 the killer is a director, so maybe films have a bigger impact on people's lives than we could ever imagine.

Desk

I included this photo, because our character will be sitting at it however, even if we don't end up doing that shot, the room is important to the opening of the movie. We get a sense of people when we see their room. Essentially the room is a character itself. It's quite a girly room and unsuspecting of what will be brought into it. It is unaware of what it's tennant does once she leaves.

Inside the Shed/Bedroom

My room is kind of bohemian looking, with lots of different colours and art on the walls. Whether or not we will keep it like this, has yet to be decided.

The Shed/Bedroom

From this angle we are establishing the shed as her room.

Back garden/My Room

Our character will be seen walking over the bridge and down the garden to her room.

Age in the Media

A positive face of youth in the media
Today's Youth-Led Media Summit brings together enthusiastic young people from around the UK who want to determine their future role – and dispel the image of dangerous hoodies.
X-it project a glimmer of hope in the fight against gang crime

How to prevent riots: invest in young people, don't criminalise them
Prison is the most expensive and least effective response to social unrest. Investing in our poor young people is a cheaper and more humane reaction

London riots: Teenagers 'lack hope'
By Andy Dangerfield BBC News, London
More than 100 people have been charged over riots and looting which began in London on Saturday
Many of London's teenagers have been rioting because they "lack hope" and "feel let down by society", according to youth group leaders

London riots: young people voice their frustrations
Condemned as 'feral scum' and the sick of society, young people speak out about the reasons behind the riots
Grim stories in the media make old age sound rotten and dangerous. It's not like that at all.

The Golden Girls Success

Positive messages: This show is a positive representation of strong older women. It looks at aging positively while also highlighting some of the problems that people inevitably face as we get older. Serious topics like AIDS and homosexuality are discussed and dealt with sensitively. Some issues -- such as gambling addiction, adultery, and theft -- are discussed in some episodes, but are presented as negative behaviors with negative consequences.
