Monsters

Now that me and Charlotte are thinking of new ideas for our film opening, i've been looking at some movies, this one being Monsters. The film opening begins with the ending of the movie. A possible consideration, maybe.

Vlog #3

80's movies!

After being ill all week I seemed to turn the clock back 20 odd years and visit the 80's, well the movies at least.

The Breakfast Club:

Brian Johnson: Dear Mr. Vernon, we accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. What we did *was* wrong. But we think you're crazy to make us write an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us... In the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain...
Andrew Clark: ...and an athlete...
Allison Reynolds: ...and a basket case...
Claire Standish: ...a princess...
John Bender: ...and a criminal...
Brian Johnson: Does that answer your question? Sincerely yours, the Breakfast Club.

I seek comfort in the cheesy lines and big hair, but john hughes is a prime example of why I want to be involved in movies. He created worlds that you want to be a part of, worlds that you relish in. The fun and silliness of life can be found in The Breakfast club, Weird Science, or Sixteen Candles but the sad thing is, it's rare to find it in film lately. I want to see a movie where if i'm dying of the flu, I actually feel better afterwards because of the 21st century equivalent quote of "Eat my shorts". What that is, I have no idea.
It's amazing how films have evolved over the years. We've moved out of the happy, shiny, feel-good phase. And maybe that's for the best, but I love that we have 80's movies to watch when we feel sick or down.

However technical stuff aside like angles and mise-en-scene, ultimately audience reaction is key. The abilty to make someone cry over a character you've only known a couple of hours or feeling your heart break when two people don't end up together, that's what the movies are all about. And the 80's do movies proud.

Representations of age in the media- OAP's

This is how the media represents old age pensioners, by using the stereotypical ideas we have of OAP's. Here we have put together a little montage to show some of it.

Marxist theory

Preferred reading:

Producers of a media text design it with a certain meaning in mind. They hope that audiences will decode their text in a certain way - particularly if the text is an advertisement. Preferred readings are those which tie in with hegemonic beliefs.

Oppositional reading:

Where the intended meaning of the text is totally opposed by the reader.

Negotiated reading:

A reading of a text which assumes that no absolute meaning exists and that meaning is generated and negotiated by what the reader brings to the text in terms of attitudes, values, beliefs and experience

Filming day

So we've done our filming now and I feel okay with what we have so far.
I love the movies, everything about the movies. It is very rare to find a film that you walk away from feeling inspired. Charlotte and I wanted to be excited when we were uploading our footage and we just didn't feel that way, so for the time being we are editing together what we have to see if we want to continue with this idea or if we have to come up with something else. Something that we go home and talk about.

Who is the fairest of them all? Who knows? There are 2 versions.

I'm so happy that this trailer has finally been released. Massive fan of the story and all the actors involved. I also love the fact that they've decided to make it look edgy and dark, in contrast to the other snow white film that is also coming out around the same time, who have gone with the more traditional look.

With this version, they have taken a more traditional comedic route, which although looks good, I prefer snow white and the huntsman.

Age in the media

In honour of the new american pie movie being released next year and the fact that we are focusing on Age in the media at the moment, I thought I would talk a little about the stereotypes of teenagers in movies. Albeit these days there is no such thing as teenagers in movies because they are always played by twenty-somethings.

American pie was the first of it's kind before movies like Superbad and 40 Year Old Virgin hit the screens. It sticks to the stereotypes of teenage boys where they are determined to lose their virginity before they graduate.

They also use countertypes like Michele 'The Band Geek' who openly talks about sex and is promiscuous going against the stereotypical idea that geeks are shy and quiet.

Pies will never be seen the same way again!

Main wall

I included this picture because my DVD's are the first thing you see as you enter the room, there are so many that me and Charlotte might consider taking some out.
Movie's are such a big part of my life but i don't know if our teenage killer would agree and say that this statement applies to her too. On the other hand movies could have such a big impact on youth that it in fact gives people ideas (like killing). For example the Scream movies, in Scream 2 one of the killers reveals that he is going to blame the movies, he is also a film student and in Scream 3 the killer is a director, so maybe films have a bigger impact on people's lives than we could ever imagine.

Desk

I included this photo, because our character will be sitting at it however, even if we don't end up doing that shot, the room is important to the opening of the movie. We get a sense of people when we see their room. Essentially the room is a character itself. It's quite a girly room and unsuspecting of what will be brought into it. It is unaware of what it's tennant does once she leaves.

Inside the Shed/Bedroom

My room is kind of bohemian looking, with lots of different colours and art on the walls. Whether or not we will keep it like this, has yet to be decided.

The Shed/Bedroom

From this angle we are establishing the shed as her room.

Back garden/My Room

Our character will be seen walking over the bridge and down the garden to her room.

Age in the Media

A positive face of youth in the media
Today's Youth-Led Media Summit brings together enthusiastic young people from around the UK who want to determine their future role – and dispel the image of dangerous hoodies.
X-it project a glimmer of hope in the fight against gang crime

How to prevent riots: invest in young people, don't criminalise them
Prison is the most expensive and least effective response to social unrest. Investing in our poor young people is a cheaper and more humane reaction

London riots: Teenagers 'lack hope'
By Andy Dangerfield BBC News, London
More than 100 people have been charged over riots and looting which began in London on Saturday
Many of London's teenagers have been rioting because they "lack hope" and "feel let down by society", according to youth group leaders

London riots: young people voice their frustrations
Condemned as 'feral scum' and the sick of society, young people speak out about the reasons behind the riots
Grim stories in the media make old age sound rotten and dangerous. It's not like that at all.

The Golden Girls Success

Positive messages: This show is a positive representation of strong older women. It looks at aging positively while also highlighting some of the problems that people inevitably face as we get older. Serious topics like AIDS and homosexuality are discussed and dealt with sensitively. Some issues -- such as gambling addiction, adultery, and theft -- are discussed in some episodes, but are presented as negative behaviors with negative consequences.

Representations of gender in British TV Drama

doctor who:

Mise en scene
The Doctor is in the Tardis with dark colours surrounding him, it’s shell- like representing how men are more closed off and keep their emotions in check more than women, compared to Rose who is on a beach which is a very open setting which can also be seen as representation of emotion, how women are open with their emotions compared to men, who, stereotypically are quite reserved. In the Tardis it’s all artificial lighting inside, creating an almost alien look with the strange combination of colours, in contrast to the beach where it has natural lighting. This conveys the point of opposites: dark vs. light, yin and yang. Also there is contrast of the character with their surroundings, for example Rose stands on a beach that is timeless and yet she is so young compared to the earth whereas The Doctor is in a very futuristic looking time machine and yet he himself is old but never ages. The shot-reverse-shot towards the end of the clip where they are both on the beach represents neutrality and that despite the fact that they are different, they still share that connection. However while they both stand on a beach, they have a different background to one another. The Doctor has a cliff representing earth, while Rose has the ocean representing water- the two things that make up our planet, working together. The Doctor is in a suit, smart or professional looking, representing men in that way, that they are powerful compared to Rose who is in a black leather jacket and pink gloves, seeming more casual maybe representing the stereotypical idea that men are professional and they go out to work and ‘bring home the bacon’ while women can dress casually because they have domestic roles that do not require them to dress smartly. Also the pink gloves can be seen as a typical girly colour. The only prop used in this clip is the sonic screwdriver by The Doctor, suggesting the theory that men like gadgets and electronics and they are all-knowing when it comes to that, also the light the screwdriver makes when it is activated is blue which is almost always associated with boys.

Editing
The main source of editing is shot-reverse-shot from the doctor to rose, and so on and so forth, it’s representing how close they are and that the conversation is just between the two of them. The Doctor is then the one who breaks this closeness by looking at rose’s family instead of her, creating an eye line match. The fact that it was him who looked away instead of her can be seen in different ways, for example either the stereotypical view of men that they are in control- the doctor is in control in this conversation- or it can be seen that he is in fact weak and can’t hold the gaze with her and has to look away. The eye line match brings rose and the audience back to reality, by seeing the family we realise that it’s not just the two of them and that feeling like the rest of the world doesn’t affect them is now shattered by seeing these three other people.

Murder scene?

i was walking my dog and had this really creepy feeling like i was being watched, once i got over the paranoia i saw how cool looking this park was.

creepy music

I found this song from the movie, 'The Innocents' and was thinking it's a super creepy song. I envisioned it playing over a high angle shot coming down on a murder victim. As morbid as this sounds, i dreamt of it that night.

Storyboarding

i've started thinking of some ideas for our opening and have doodled more than anything. In case you didn't know storyboards are drawings of a scene shot by shot. It makes it a lot easier to visualise what you are about to shoot. they are kind of like comics.

Preliminary outtakes editing

After school, another round of editing ensued, this time it was the outtakes. I think we've managed to wrap our heads around imovie now and had fun doing it. We learned how to transition from scene to scene making it flow better. Also we discovered how to adjust the audio which resulted in some very funny results.

Great film opening of Resident Evil: Afterlife

I love this opening, its slow motion, so that when that attack comes, it looks quick and animalistic. It captures the Resident Evil franchise well with it's dark lighting and wide aerial shots. The sea of umbrellas make you feel safer until you see one girl alone standing in the rain.

My passion can also be seen as obsession

My DVD collection, i'm like a proud mother. My love for movies shows in my room because of my mini blockbuster.

And the Oscar goes to ... The King's Speech, should have guessed!

So this is what 16 takes and giggly actors will get you, not a bad piece and i am pretty proud of the editing we did.

x-men
I love Marvel comics and in this outtake, a fake spiderman stumbles on the wrong set.

Prelim Editing

After school today, Charlotte and I stayed behind to edit our preliminary. It was one of the best experiences of Media so far, other than filming the prelim itself. Why is this? you may ask, the sense of accomplishment afterwards and seeing our work put together was amazing, it reminded me of why I love film. I'm starting to get really excited for the main event now, THE MOVIE.
Now we just have to put together the outtakes, this should be fun.

Upcoming movies 2011-12

I've just finished my Youtube frenzy of re-watching upcoming movie trailers and cannot wait for some of them. I am a massive movie junkie and proud of it. Here are a few that I have started a coundown for:

I love, love, love the underworld trilogy (well maybe not so much the third one) so when I heard a fourth was coming out I couldn't contain my joy. The fight sequences are fast paced and fun, and the fact that our hero is a heroine makes me even more giddy. The underworld franchise are some of my favourite vampire movies along with Blade trilogy, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Interview with a vampire and Van Helsing.

I'm aware that this trailer looks like a typical action adventure movie however it seems I can't resist some good slow-mo fight scenes that director Paul.W. Anderson has become known for. PLUS, Milla Jovovich once again plays a kick-ass action role. I look forward to see if this movie is just a fluff piece or a hidden treasure.

Last but not least. I was shown this trailer the other day in literature (thanks foster)and I was captivated by the dark romantic way in which they've presented this film, plus the song they have used in this trailer is great (everything in it's right place- Radiohead) ,it contrasts the period in which the film is set. There is a modern aspect to this movie, using high angle shots and slow pans. Looks great.

Preliminary task

Today Charlotte and I shot our prelim with Lois and Daisy as our actors. What started off as a trainwreck/plane crash/tsunami slowly moved into a comedy rather than a natural disaster. We are not exactly at the Hall of Fame just yet, but today gave us insight into how to work the camera and got us into the mindset of directors (preferably ones like Ridley Scott or Michael Bay, OR SPIELBERG!!!). Today has reassured me, before I was quite nervous but we had fun filming our little scene today and we laughed A LOT, so overall not a bad day's work. So now we just have to edit, easier said than done.

Life in a day

A movie completely comprised of YouTube clips of life within a day.Answering three main questions: who do you love? What's in your pocket? What do you fear? On the 24th July, people all around the world started filming and resulted in this 90 minute feature. This movie is a celebration of life and love and death, everything that makes us human,it places emphasis on enjoying every moment of everyday. This movie inspires me because it reminds people how powerful film can be, to capture every moment.

"(Life in a Day) reaffirms the importance of YouTube as a space for citizen journalism."

Groups, Preliminary and 'ACTION'

Today we sorted out our groups and although I am excited to start what will hopefully be an oscar worthy movie, I am also a little nervous. Now we have to start thinking of ideas. But before all this, the preliminary task...
Me and Charlotte have come up with some good ideas and possible angles we would like to do. Only time will tell.

Women in the Media

My hero- Milla Jovovich is one major action star and can be seen in films like the Resident Evil movies, The Fifth Element and Ultraviolet and contrary to popular belief she's not a 200 pound well muscled guy that everyone imagines when they think of an action star (Jason Statham).

However, even when we see beautiful women firing guns or wielding a sword they remain in skimpy clothes and perfect hair and make up.

Or in Selene's case (Underworld) tight black leather...

Have women progressed forward into the 21st Century when it comes to media, or are these subtle hints not so subtle?

Definitions

A shot reverse shot is where one character is seen looking at another and then that character is seen looking back at the first character. It is often used when editing dialogue sequences.
Match on action is when something is happening in a scene and there is a cut, the same piece of action must continue. This helps with continuity issues.

My favourite scene

I've just finished watching one of my all time favourites. Armageddon. And I found myself subconsiously taking note. If only we had the budget to shoot around the world because these shots are fantastic. This scene is one of the best, every movie should make you feel the way this one does. Hopeful. It still gives me goosebumps.

Location, location, location

Would love to shoot in a place like this. The perfect Mise-en-scene, only downside is that it's in Germany. If only.

Today's lesson

How are different social groups represented in the media? Today we saw a film still, which purpose was to condemn racism but came across as encouraging it. It seems as though wherever we look in the media a social group is being stereotyped and I don't think it will end any time soon because we, the lovely British public love to hate someone whether it be noisy teenagers or women drivers.
